As revealed in their official X post, Epic Games’ venture into the mobile gaming industry positions them as the first-ever multiplatform store with a primary focus on games, catering to users globally.
In their post on X, they state, “Equal and fair terms, accessible to all developers, on an authentic multiplatform storefront – featuring incredible games for all.” Further details about Epic Games’ entry into mobile gaming emerged during their event titled “State Of Unreal” at GDC. The official release date of their store has not been declared yet, but it has been mentioned that it will be launched later this year.
During an interview, Epic Games General Manager Steve Allison expressed that the company had been tirelessly battling against industry giants like Apple and Google to realise their vision.
Better Revenue Terms For Developers Than Other Mobile Platforms
Epic Games affirmed that they would maintain consistent terms between their PC Game Store and their mobile app. Keeping their 88% revenue scheme will not only benefit the game developers but will also help improve the mobile gaming industry.
The dominant platforms, such as Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store, typically take a 30% commission from game revenue, whereas Epic Games’ 12% commission offers game developers more revenue and autonomy.
Given that Epic Games owns Unreal Engine, a platform utilised in numerous popular games, it will assist them in curating high-quality titles for their store. Additionally, they will introduce new self-publishing tools tailored for mobile, facilitating developers in sharing of their creations on the forthcoming app.
